Cultura Mapocho, an initiative to promote the history and culture of Santiago de Chile, was formed in 2002, drawing together professionals from different backgrounds, working in urban history, food journalism, restoration and tourism. They work to stimulate and develop activities which help in the recovery and diffusion of Santiago’s cultural heritage.
Among the activities organized by Cultura Mapocho during 2003, special mention deserve the “Noche de San Juan” party, and the celebration of Valparaiso’s nomination as “World Heritage”, both at Universidad Internacional SEK.
In 2004, 2005 and 2006 Cultura Mapocho once again organized the “Heritage Day” and the “San Juan’s Night” in the USIEK.
Cultura Mapocho also organizes a seminar about heritage and tourism in Santiago, together with UISEK, the “Santiago Casa Colorada” museum, and the “Oral literature and popular traditions archive” from the National Library. The seminar includes talks, tours, and the recreations of traditional festivities. Important personalities in urban culture have taken part in these seminars, including Micaela Navarrete, Fidel Sepúlveda, Maximiliano Salina and Camilo Marks. Among Cultura Mapocho’s academic activities there are seminars, diplomas and others, all with the purpose of stressing and communicating the value of the cultural heritage of Santiago.
